Arizona State Recap
Arizona men's swimming and diving is coming off a draw with Arizona State on senior day. The meet came down the last event, the 400 free relay. Arizona State needed a 1-2 finish to win while the Cats needed a first-place finish or both teams in the top three to win. Arizona's A team took second while ASU went 1-3, ending the meet in a 147-147 tie.
Junior
Nick Thorne led the day with two individual victories, his first of the season. He was the only male to have more than one event. His first victory came in the 200 back with a personal-best time of 1:43.70. He later won the 400 IM by a comfortable margin with 3:49.18, giving the Cats the lead going into the last event.
The men won seven events in the meet, other victors including junior
Chris Wieser (1,000 free), sophomore
Blair Bish (100 breast), junior
Justin Wright (200 fly) and sophomore
Chatham Dobbs (50 free).
Looking at the Competition
No. 15 Arizona has competed against all of the Pac-12 teams in a head-to-head meet this year.
No. 15 Arizona State: The Sun Devils are 4-2-1 on the season, most recently tying Arizona. Their four wins came against Utah, BYU, Denver and USC.
No. 1 California: The Bears are undefeated this season at 5-0. California has beat Pacific, Arizona, ASU, USC and Stanford. The rest of the season comprised of invitationals. California topped Arizona in Tucson, 113-161.
No. 5 Stanford: Stanford is 4-1 on the season, losing to only No. 1 California. Already at the men's Pac-12 diving championships, the Cardinal won the 1-meter and went 1-2 in the platform. The Cats dropped to Stanford, 118-170.
No. 13 USC: The Trojans are 7-3 this season, dropping a meet to California, Stanford and USC. In the meet against Arizona, USC took it, 129-165.
Utah: Utah is 4-4 on the season. In a dual-meet early this season, Arizona was victorious over Utah, 156-142.
Justin Wright: Top-Two Crew
Sophomore
Justin Wright has had success in the 200 fly this season, not finishing lower than second all year. He took first in the prelims of the 100 fly at the Texas Invitational and against No. 3 Texas, No. 11 Stanford. He finished second in the finals at the Texas Invite and against No. 1 California, Utah.
Wright set the school record in the 200 fly at the Pac-12 Championships last year, first in a time trial and later in the scored event where he finished second behind California with 1:41.76.
Arizona in the Rankings
The Cats have multiple swimmers in the USA Swimming Top-100 Times this season. The men have 57 times in the top-100 coming from 22 different swimmers.
The men have eight total times in the top-20 rankings coming from five swimmers. Junior
Nick Thorne leads the team with five of his own. His highest is tenth in the 400 IM and a tie for 15th in the 200 IM.
Sophomore
Justin Wright holds the highest-ranked time at sixth in the 200 fly. His time from the meet against ASU moved him up 11 spots. Sophomore
Chatham Dobbs holds the second-highest time and second-most with four. Dobbs has the eighth-fastest time in the 100 back and tenth-fastest in the 100 fly.
