TUCSON, Ariz. – Arizona's track and field team began their outdoor season today hosting their annual Willie Williams Classic at Roy P. Drachman Stadium.
"Today was a great day for our team," head coach Fred Harvey said. "The throwers were awesome, Viktor (Gardenkrans) in the discus, Erik (Mensendiek) in the javelin both did an amazing job. It was great to see Miles (Parish) get off to a great start in the hurdles, and the girls in the 200 were outstanding today."
Grayson Fleming kicked off his outdoor season with a huge personal best in the hammer throw at a mark of 59.33 meters (194' 7") for first-place, the 12th-best mark in the country so far in the early season. Clay Cashman took second at a mark of 55.03 meters (180' 6").
Miles Parish took first overall in the men's 400-meter hurdles with a time of 51.56 seconds, his second-best career time and the best time in the NCAA this outdoor season. Michael Demby took fifth at a time of 53.17 seconds.
Savaughn Christman set a new personal best in the 200-meter race with a time of 24.28 seconds for second-place, Diana Gajda finished close behind in third with a time of 24.31 seconds. Pamela White ran a time of 24.91 seconds for seventh-place.
Bryce Houston took first in the 200-meter at 21.75 seconds. Isaac Hing finished behind him at 21.80 seconds with David Egbo running a time of 21.92 seconds. Those were outdoor personal bests for Houston and Egbo.
Erik Mensendiek took first in the javelin with a personal best mark of 66.16 meters (217').
In the women's shot put, Megan Dulaney took second-place with a personal best mark of 14.68 meters (48' 1.75").
Viktor Gardenkrans won the discus throw with a mark of 53.21 meters (174' 7").
Carlos Villarreal set a new personal best time in the 1,500-meter race with a time of 3:49.77 for first-place.
The Wildcats will be back in action tomorrow morning for day two of the Willie Williams Classic with events beginning at 9 am. PST.
