STANFORD, Calif. - Arizona (9-6, 1-3 Pac-12) dropped the second match of this weekend's action, as the Cats fell 6-1 to No. 4 Stanford (11-1, 4-0 Pac-12). In the loss, No. 31
Lauren Marker picked up her 100th-career singles victory, becoming the first Wildcat to do so since head coach
Vicky Maes in 1998.
"I'm happy with the way we competed today," said Maes. "I saw some really good things from everyone and I was pleased to see us battle. Kudos to Lauren for the great win on court No. 1 and also another excellent match from Paris. While we are hurt and not the same team without Sam and Devin, our girls are truly making the best out of the situation and gaining some well-needed experience. We just need to keep learning and keep grinding until things turn our way again.
"I'm really happy about getting to 100," said Marker. "It was a long term goal I had set for myself during my freshman year, so to finally reach it is a great feeling. I couldn't have gotten to this point without all of my awesome and dedicated coaches who have helped so much over the years. They all played a part in getting here."
Arizona once again fell behind in the doubles point, as Stanford moved quickly on the top two courts. No. 29 Doyle/Lord defeated
Marie Van Aelst and
Camila Wesbrooks 6-0, and Arbuthnott/Davidson beat
Paris Corley and Marker 6-1.
Maggie Cohen and
Sophia Thomas trailed Higuchi/Lampl 5-2 at the time the point was clinched.
The Cardinal, who feature nationally ranked players at all six positions, took five out of six singles matches. No. 67 Emily Arbuthnott beat Cohen 6-0, 6-0. No. 13 Melissa Lord won a 6-0, 6-4 match over Wesbrooks. No. 46 Emma Higuchi defeated Thomas 6-2, 6-0 to clinch the Stanford victory. Van Aelst dropped a tough 6-4, 7-5 match to No. 73 Caroline Lampl. No. 31 Marker put Arizona on the board with a 6-4, 7-5 win over No. 69 Taylor Davidson. The win was also her 100th-career singles victory. This is yet another accolade for Marker's career, as she joins Maes as the only Wildcats with 100 wins over the last 20 years. Corley rounded out the action with a hard-fought 3-6, 6-2, 7-6 (4) loss to No. 36 Caroline Doyle.
