BERKELEY, Calif. -- Fourth-ranked Arizona hit three home runs and defeated California 7-0 in game 1 of the three-game series in Berkeley, Calif. at Levine-Fricke Field.
Mo Mercado,
Jessie Harper and
Alyssa Palomino hit Arizona's NCAA-leading 52nd, 53rd and 54th home runs of 2017, three of Arizona's nine hits on the afternoon.
Danielle O'Toole tossed the shutout, her sixth of the season, allowing just four hits with eight strikeouts and one walk. O'Toole picked up her Pac-12-leading 18th win of the season to improve to 18-1.
The victory is the 20th in a row for Arizona, which improved to 35-1 (7-0 Pac-12). Cal fell to 21-8 (3-4 Pac-12) with the loss.
Reyna Carranco remained red-hot at the plate, going 2-for-3 to take over the team lead in Pac-12 batting average (.474).
In the second inning,
Mo Mercado was at first with two out before the Wildcats ripped off four straight singles, including RBI from
Reyna Carranco and
Mandie Perez, to put the Cats up 2-0.
In the third, Mercado and Harper hit home runs on back-to-pitches to extend the UA lead. Katiyana Mauga hit a one-out single to left to get the party started. Trzcinski got ahead of Mercado 0-2 before her next two pitches were crushed to left. Mercado's two-run homer made it 4-0 before Harper made it 5-0.
The Cats added an unearned run in the fifth when
Tamara Statman's RBI groundout plated pinch-runner
Eva Watson following a Cal error to put the Cats ahead 6-0.
Palomino crushed a solo homer into the trees in right to lead off the seventh.
