The GymCats Suffer Loss Against ASU

TUCSON, AZ – Arizona Gymnastics fell to Arizona State University this afternoon with a score of 195.375 to 195.700. Despite the loss the GymCats earned their second highest attendance score of the season with 2,410 fans in attendance.
 
"Overall today was a very disappointing performance," said head coach Tabitha Yim. "What you saw today was very uncharacteristic of this team. We had hoped to send our seniors out on a better note, but we will certainly be getting back in to the gym to ensure that we learn from this experience. We intend to approach the end of this season with the right mentality to make sure we reach our full potential as a team."
 
Arizona started out the competition on vault, earning a team score of 48.925. Heather Swanson came up with a 9.825 while Jenny Leung and Madison Cindric earned a pair of 9.800's. Gabrielle Laub and Lauryn Mattson also contributed a 9.750 each.
 
During the second rotation the GymCats took to the uneven bars. Junior Victoria Ortiz really shined for Arizona when she earned a 9.925, this being the fifth week in a row earning a 9.900 or higher. The seniors came up big on bars, Krysten Howard scored a 9.875, Selynna Felix-Terrazas contributed a 9.825, and Gabrielle Laub earned a 9.775. Victoria Ortiz and Krysten Howard took home the first and second place titles from the uneven bars competition.
 
Entering the third rotation Arizona held a score of 97.625. The first two competitors on beam were Krysten Howard and Haylie Hendrickson, both earning a 9.825. Courtney Cowles tied her season and career high of 9.800 and Kennady Schneider also contributed a 9.800.
 
On the final rotation Arizona tied their season high floor score with a 49.200. Senior Krysten Howard earned a new season and career high score in her last home meet as a GymCat with a 9.925. Kennady Schneider wooed the judges with her self-choreographed floor routine earning a 9.900. Lauryn Mattson earned a new season high and tied her career high with a 9.875, and Heather Swanson earned a new season and career high with a 9.850.  Arizona swept ASU in the individual results on floor taking home first, second, and third place.

This upcoming Friday the GymCats will be traveling to compete against Brigham Young University. The meet will be at 7 p.m. Mountain Standard Tim and televised by the Pac-12 Network.
