TUCSON, Ariz. – Head coach
Vicky Maes has received a National Letter of Intent from Mary Profit (Lewis) to play tennis for the University of Arizona.
"Mary is a tremendous addition to our program," said Maes. "On the court, even though she has already accomplished so much, she is a diamond in the rough. There is a ton of ability in Mary. We will polish her game and use her amazing athleticism to turn her into a top collegiate player. There is no doubt in my mind she is going to set records if she puts in the proper focus and hard work. I know she is committed to this process and excited about getting to the next level. Off the court, she is a total sweetheart and will be a great teammate. Academically, she sets the bar high too. Basically, Mary checks all of the Arizona boxes. I'm thrilled she has chosen to join our family."
"Throughout the recruiting process, Mary exemplified what we look for in an incoming student-athlete," said assistant coach
Andrew Veeder. "She is someone who is dedicated to improving, not afraid of hard work, a fierce competitor, but just as important, a great fit. Coach Maes and I are thrilled to have Mary join the Wildcat family. We know that she will make an impact in our lineup and will push the rest of the team on the court and in the gym, as well as the classroom.
Profit is a five-star recruit from Bellflower, Calif. She is ranked No. 48 in the senior class national rankings. In the last few years, she has defeated several highly-ranked opponents, including: Hannah Zhao (blue chip recruit, No. 7 in the nation); Sara Choy (blue chip recruit, No. 17 in the nation); Jennifer Kerr (five-star recruit, No. 28 in the nation); Emily Duong (five-star recruit, No. 34 in the nation); and Yekatrarina Alferova (five-star recruit, No. 36 in the nation).
Additionally, Profit has traveled internationally to play professional tournaments. She also has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. Her sister, Elizabeth Profit, plays tennis for Baylor. Mary is academically ambitious as well, and hopes to study Engineering at Arizona.
"New experiences can prove extremely challenging and scary at times," said Profit. "However, I believe the University of Arizona will give me the best opportunity to accomplish my endeavors. Most importantly, I feel I will be surrounded by people who truly want to help me succeed."
Profit joins Gitte Heynemans in Arizona's 2017-2018 recruiting class.
