TUCSON, Ariz. – Head women's basketball coach
Adia Barnes has brought in a pair of transfers to join the Arizona women's basketball program in the signing of Kat Wright and Tee Tee Starks.
Â
Wright spent this past year in Boca Raton at Florida Atlantic on the sidelines as she took a medical redshirt after suffering a season-ending injury. During her junior year, she started in 30 games and was second on the team with 11.7 points and grabbed 4.6 rebounds per game, which was third on the team.
Â
"We are thrilled to welcome Kat Wright to the Wildcat Family," Barnes said. "Kat is a very accomplished player who is a fierce competitor with a high basketball IQ. She is a player that we can use in many different ways and she will also stretch the floor for us. I'm glad our paths have crossed again as she played AAU ball for a good friend of mine Stan DeLeus. Kat and I clicked from the beginning and will bring tremendous value to our culture. I can't wait to coach her on and off the floor."
Â
The Woodland Hills, Calif. native also led the team with 87 made three-pointers and shot 40.1% from downtown, good for three made treys per game. On Jan. 30, 2016, the sharpshooter made a run at an NCAA record as she drained 11 three-pointers against Charlotte, which is the second-most made three-pointers in NCAA history.
Â
"I'm so excited to spend my last year playing for the University of Arizona, competing in one of the top conferences and playing for a phenomenal coaching staff," Wright said. "I couldn't be anymore proud to call myself a Wildcat."
Â
During her three-year career at Florida Atlantic, Wright played in 84 games and started in 71 of them. She averaged 7.4 points per game in those 84 games and made 145 three-pointers while shooting 34.5% from downtown.
Â
Wright will be immediately eligible to play in the 2017-18 season.
Â
During the 2016-17 season at Iowa State, Starks played in all 31 games and started in 14 of them. She averaged 18.6 minutes per game while scoring three points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out two assists per game. Starks was also named to the Academic All-Big-12 First Team for her performance in the classroom.
Â
"Tee Tee is a winner," Barnes said. "She has had a tremendous amount of success throughout her career on and off the court. Although she won't be able to play right away, she will still be very valuable to the team for our championship culture. She is tough, smart and does so many things well to help her team win. Tee Tee is outstanding in the classroom and will be very essential to our future success. She embodies everything a Wildcat is."
Â
Starks played in nine games in the 2015-16 season, but suffered a season-ending injury and was awarded a medical redshirt, giving her two years of eligibility at Arizona.
Â
"I'm very excited to join the Wildcat family for the next few years," Starks said. "I chose Arizona because of the family like feel I got from the team and the relationship already established between myself and the coaching staff. With Arizona being so far of a distance from home for me, having that "home away from home" feeling was huge. The campus is beyond beautiful, the team is a great group of girls and I can't wait to make it my new home."Â
Â
The Brooklyn Park, Minn. native was a four-year letterwinner for the legendary Hopkins High School and won three State Championships during her freshman, sophomore and senior seasons while scoring over 1,000 points during her career. Starks finished her high school career rated as the No. 39 prospect by ProspectNation.com and was also named the top Minnesota prospect by 5 State Hoops.
Â
Starks will be forced to sit out a year due to NCAA transfer rules.
