No. 24 Stanford Knocks off Arizona 61-46

TUCSON, Ariz. – No. 24 Stanford (9-6, 3-0 Pac-12) won their third-straight Pac-12 game to start the conference season on Friday night as they took down Arizona (4-10, 0-3 Pac-12) by a score of 61-46 in McKale Center. Excluding the first quarter, Stanford outscored Arizona by just three points.

"Overall I do feel like we got better tonight," head coach Adia Barnes said. "Our zone got better, it's just the rebounding was a thorn in our side. They had 25 offensive rebounds, but it felt like they had 40."

The Cardinal used a big first quarter to stretch their lead to double-figures and they would not look back. The story of the game for the 24th-ranked Cardinal was defense as they forced Arizona into shooting 30% from the field and did not allow a fast-break point. Stanford also dominated the glass, outrebounding Arizona 51-32 while winning the points in the paint battle 32-14.

Lucia Alonso was Arizona top scorer with a game-high 15 points while Sam Thomas also added in 10 points for the Wildcats.

Stanford came out hot in the first quarter, taking a 23-11 lead at the break. The Cardinal shot 50% from the field in the first quarter while Arizona shot just 25%. Kiana Williams had 11 points herself. Arizona started off the second quarter on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to six, but Stanford would go on to score the final eight points of the fourth quarter to take a 35-21 lead into the locker room for halftime.

The third quarter was back and forth as the two teams traded buckets throughout the period. Once it was all said and done, Arizona and Stanford both scored 16 points, giving Stanford a 51-37 lead heading into the fourth quarter. The two teams played excellent defense in the fourth quarter as there was just 19 total points scored combined, but Stanford was able to maintain a comfortable lead throughout the quarter, giving them their ninth win of the season.

The Wildcats will wrap up the first Pac-12 home series of the year on Sunday at noon MST as they face the 23rd-ranked California Golden Bears on the Pac-12 Networks.
