Hasslen Posts No. 3 Mark In The Country
The No. 10 men's and No. 13 women's track and field teams were victorious in two events and posted personal-best marks in five.

TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcats No. 10 men's and No. 13 women's track and field teams were split between the Don Kirby Open and the Husky Classic on Saturday. The distance runners competed at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. The throwers and a small group of sprinters competed in the Don Kirby Open in Albuquerque, N.M. The Wildcats claimed victories in two events and posted five personal-best marks.
In the women’s shot put, junior Alyssa Hasslen posted a personal-best mark of 57-4.25 (17.48m), good for first place and the No. 3 collegiate mark in the country. Senior Julie Labonté earned a second-place finish with a mark of 56-3 (17.14m). Sophomore Baillie Gibson threw 52-2.5 (15.91m), good for third place overall. Senior Taylor Freeman came in fourth place with a mark of 50-2.75 (15.31m), the second-best toss of her career. Senior Omotayo Talabi’s mark of 48-2.5 (14.69m) was good for fifth place.
Freeman won the women’s weight throw with a mark of 63-9.75 (19.45m), also the second-best mark of her career. She has continued her streak, posting the five best marks of her career in five competitions this season. Sophomore Baillie Gibson finished in third place with a mark of 61-8.5 (18.81m), the second-best toss of her career.
In the preliminary round of the women’s 60-meter dash, junior Germe Poston clocked a time of 7.60, good for fifth place. In the final, Poston’s time of 7.52 was good for fourth place and the No. 4 time of her career.
In Seattle, sophomore Nicci Corbin clocked a personal-best time of 4:40.88 in the women’s mile invite, good for 18th place. In the open mile, sophomore Kate Penney clocked a personal-best time of 4:50.57, good for seventh place. In the men’s open mile, sophomore Sam Macaluso ran a personal-best time of 4:10.24.
In the women’s 3,000 meters, sophomore Stephanie Bulder posted a time of 9:46.61, the second-best time of her career. On the men’s side, sophomore Kenji Bierig ran a personal-best time of 8:13.82.
Junior Lawi Lalang ran the men’s 800 meters in 1:49.76, taking 12th place.
