TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat No. 10 men's and No. 12 women's track and field teams will compete in one of the fiercest non-championship meet of the 2012 indoor season at the Razorback Invitational on Jan. 27-28, held at the University of Arkansas' Randal Tyson Track Center. The field events start at 3 p.m., the running preliminaries start at 6:30 p.m. and the combined events start at 12 p.m. on Friday. On Saturday, the field events and combined events begin at 12 p.m. while the running semifinals and finals begin at 11 a.m.
On Friday and Saturday, Arizona (M: No. 10, W: No. 12), Arkansas (M: No. 1, W: No. 3), Baylor (M: NR, W: No. 16), Florida State (M: No. 4, W: No. 9), Georgia (M: No. 23, W: No. 13), Iowa (men only, No. 17), LSU (M: No. 3, W: No. 2), Oklahoma (M: No. 13, W: No. 19), Oklahoma State (NR), SMU (women only, NR), Stanford (M: No. 7, W: No. 24), Texas (men only, No. 5) and TCU (NR) will be competing.
On the men's side, four of the top-five, six of the top-10 and eight of the 13 teams competing are ranked inside top 25. Also on the men's side, one national leader will compete along with a total of nine top-five performers in their respective events.
On the women's side, three of the top-five and nine of the top-25 teams will be competing. Also on the women's side, there are six national leaders in their respective events.
In the 2012 USTFCCCA national poll, the Arizona men sit at the No. 10 spot and the women are ranked 12th. The UA men are joined by two other Pac-12 schools in the national poll. Stanford is ranked seventh and Oregon sits at No. 19. On the women's side, three other schools join Arizona in the national poll. Oregon is No. 1, Arizona State is 21st and Stanford is No. 24.
Making season debuts at Arkansas are junior Julie Labonté and sophomore Bozidar Antunovic in the shot put, sophomore Lawi Lalang and senior Stephen Sambu in the distance races, junior Jen Bergman in the distance races. Junior Elizabeth Apgar, junior Melanie McGrath, sophomore Elvin Kibet and sophomore Amanda Russell will be making their 2012 debut this weekend. Junior Armand Rhone will debut in the 200-meter dash and 400-meter dash. Senior Abdi Hassan and junior Kevin Jani are debuting in the 800 meters. Senior Tyler Johnson is competing in the weight throw. Additionally, junior Nick Rosswill be competing in his first collegiate heptathlon.
Freshman Kenji Bierig and freshman Patrick Zacharias in the distance races will be making their Arizona debuts this weekend. Additionally, freshman Stephanie Bulder and Haley Stenquistwill run the distance races.
Junior high jumper Brigetta Barrett is the lone Wildcat to punch her ticket to the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 9-10, in Boise, Idaho. Barrett cleared 6-2 to win the event at the Lumberjack Invitational, Jan. 14, in Flagstaff, Ariz.
