The Arizona Wildcat No. 5 men's and No. 10 women's track and field teams will compete in the NAU Team Challenge on Feb. 4, held at Northern Arizona University's J.L. Walkup Skydome. The field events start at 9 a.m. and the track events start at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The No. 5 Arizona men and No. 10 women will compete against Arizona State (M: NR, W:17), Northern Arizona (M: 24, W: NR), San Diego State (NR), Cal-State Dominguez Hills (NR), Cal-State Bakersfield (NR) and LaVerne University (NR).
In the 2012 USTFCCCA national poll, the Arizona men sit at the No. 5 spot and the women are ranked 10th. The men climbed five spots and the women moved up two spots in the latest polls. The UA men are joined by two other Pac-12 schools in the national poll. Stanford is ranked seventh and Oregon sits at No. 20. On the women's side, three other schools join Arizona in the national poll. Oregon is No. 1, Arizona State is 17th and Stanford is 21st.
Junior Taylor Freeman will compete in the shot put and weight throw. Senior Echos Blevins will run the 400-meter dash along with junior Shale' Garland. Sophomore Shapri Romero will run the 60 meters, 400 meters and the 4x400-meter relay. Sophomore Bozidar Antunovic will compete in the shot put and junior Chris McSwain will run the 60 and 200 meters.
Sophomore Darien McKinley will be making his season debut in Flagstaff, competing in the hurdles. Sophomore Davis Rajs will compete in the 800 meters and sophomore Garic Wharton will run the 60-meter dash.
Freshman Molly Callahan, freshman Kate Penney and freshman Thomas Valente, in the distance races, will be making their Arizona debuts this weekend. Additionally, sophomore Sergio Carrillo will be competing in the sprints.
Junior high jumper Brigetta Barrett improved her mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 9-10, in Boise, Idaho. Barrett's school record clearance of 6-5.5 is the best mark in the country. Junior Julie Labonté punched her ticket, throwing 59-1.25, a school record toss. Sambu's personal best time of 7:51.59 in the 3K is an automatic qualifying time. Sophomore Lawi Lalang set a school record in the mile, running 3:55.09. Junior Nick Ross cleared 7-4.5, tying a world record for high jump clearance in a heptathlon.
