TUCSON - The Arizona Wildcat No. 5 men’s and No. 10 women’s track and field teams will compete in the Husky Classic and the Boise State Team Challenge on Feb. 10-11, held at Washington’s Dempsey Indoor and Boise State’s Jackson Track. Arizona’s distance runners will head to Seattle, sophomore Lawi Lalang and senior Stephen Sambu will compete in the 5K at the Millrose Games and the remaining members of the team will head to Boise State. On Friday, the running events start at 4 p.m. at the Husky Classic and at 9 a.m. on Saturday. At the Boise State Team Challenge, the first event starts at 2:30 p.m. on Friday and 9 a.m. on Saturday.
The No. 5 Arizona men and No. 10 women will compete against Arizona State (M: No. 24, W: No. 21), BYU ( M: No. 14, W: No. 7), Florida (men only, No. 2), Georgia (M: No. 22, W: 13), Iowa (M: No. 20), Oregon (M: 21, W: No. 1), Stanford (M: No. 7,W: No. 23) and many others at the Husky Classic. UA will also face Arizona State in the Boise State Team Challenge along with Nevada, UC Santa Barbara. and others.
In the 2012 USTFCCCA national poll, the Arizona men stayed at the No. 5 spot and the women remained 10th. The UA men are now joined by three other Pac-12 schools in the national poll. Stanford is ranked seventh, Oregon dropped to No. 20 and Arizona State moved to the 24th spot. On the women’s side, three fellow Pac-12 schools join Arizona in the national poll. Oregon is No. 1, Arizona State fell to 21st and Stanford dropped to 23rd.
Sophomore Elvin Kibet and junior Jen Bergman are both set to compete in the 5,000 meters at the Husky Classic. Bergman is also competing in the mile with junior Elizabeth Apgar and senior Abdi Hassan is competing in the mile for the men. At the Boise State Team Challenge, junior Brigetta Barrett will be competing in the high jump. Junior Julie Labonté will be competing in the shot put along with junior Taylor Freeman. Sophomore Tamara Pridgett will run the 60 meters and 200 meters. The women’s 4x400-meter relay squad will consist of sophomore Shapri Romero, junior Shale’ Garland, senior Ariel Coleman and senior Echos Blevins. Juniors Nick Ross and Edgar Rivera-Morales will be competing in the high jump. Sophomore Bozidar Antunovic will throw the shot put.
Junior James Eichberger will be making his season debut at the Husky Classic, running the 800-meter race. Freshman Nathan Kandie and freshman Clea Formaz will be making their debut for Arizona at the Husky Classic. Kandie will run the mile and Formaz will compete in the 3,000 meters. Sophomore Keegan Cooke will debut at the Boise State Team Challenge, competing in the shot put, high jump and 60-meter hurdles.
NCAA Champion Liz Patterson will compete in the high jump Saturday at 9:15 a.m. MT at the Boise State Team Challenge. All-American LaTisha Holden will compete in the 60-meter hurdles at the Millrose Games at 4:55 p.m. ET. Volunteer assistant Jill Camarena-Williams will compete in the shot put at the USA Track and Field Classic in Fayetteville, Ark at 4:15 p.m. MT. Fellow volunteer assistant and World Champion Bernard Lagat will compete in the 5,000-meter race at the Millrose Games with Lalang and Sambu. That race will take place at 6:20 p.m. ET.
Junior high jumper Brigetta Barrett improved her mark for the NCAA Indoor Championships, March 9-10, in Boise, Idaho. Barrett’s school record clearance of 6-5.5 is the best mark in the country. Junior Julie Labonté punched her ticket, throwing 59-1.25, a school record toss. Sambu’s personal best time of 7:51.59 in the 3K is an automatic qualifying time. Sophomore Lawi Lalang set a school record in the mile, running 3:55.09. Junior Nick Ross cleared 7-4.5, tying a world record for high jump clearance in a heptathlon.
