TUCSON - The Arizona Wildcat No. 6 men’s and No. 16 women’s track and field teams will compete in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Championships on Feb. 24-25, held at Washington’s Dempsey Indoor Track Center. On Friday, the first event starts at 12:30 p.m. PT with events resuming at 10:30 a.m. PT on Saturday.
The No. 6 Arizona men and No. 16 women will compete against Arizona State (M: No. 7, W: NR), BYU ( M: No. 16, W: No. 14), California (M: NR, W: 19), Cal State Northridge (M: NR, W: NR), Colorado (M: NR, W: NR), Long Beach State (M: NR, W: NR), Oregon (M: 20, W: No. 1), Stanford (M: No. 12,W: No. 18), UC Irvine (M: NR, W: NR), UCLA (M: NR, W: NR), Utah (M: NR, W: NR), Washington (M: NR, W:23) and Washington State (M: NR, W: NR).
In the current 2012 USTFCCCA national poll, the Arizona men dropped to the No. 6 spot and the women fell to 16th. The UA men are joined by three other Pac-12 schools in the national poll. Arizona State is ranked seventh, Stanford is No. 12 and Oregon is No. 19. On the women’s side, four fellow Pac-12 schools accompany Arizona in the national poll. Oregon is No. 1, Stanford is 18th, California is No. 19 and Washington is 23rd.
Junior Nick Ross will compete in the long jump on Friday and in the triple jump and high jump on Saturday. Junior Edgar Rivera-Morales will compete in the high jump, looking to defend his title from 2011. Junior Chris McSwain will run the 60 meters and 200 meters, also the defending MPSF Champion in both events. The men’s distance medley relay team is slated to consist of freshman Nathan Kandie, sophomore Sean Delfani, junior Kevin Jani and senior Stephen Sambu. Sambu will also compete in the 3,000 meters with sophomore Lawi Lalang and Kandie.
On the women’s side, senior Liana Fuentes and sophomore Amber Passalaqua will compete in the pentathlon. Sophomore Tamara Pridgett will run the 60 meters and 200 meters. Senior Dahlys Marshall will run the 60-meter dash and the 60-meter hurdles. The dynamic trio of senior Echos Blevins, junior Shale’ Garland and sophomore Shapri Romero will run the 200 meters and 400 meters. Junior Julie Labonté will look to win her third-straight MPSF Indoor Championship in the shot put. Junior Brigetta Barrett will compete in the high jump, attempting to win her second-straight title, as well. The women’s distance medley relay team is slated to consist of junior Melanie McGrath, junior Andrea Menhennet, junior Liz Apgar and freshman Nicci Corbin. Junior Jen Bergman and sophomore Elvin Kibet will both compete in the 3,000 meters and 5,000 meters.
Volunteer assistant coaches and U.S. record holders Jill Camarena-Williams and Bernard Lagat are both set to compete in the USA Indoor Track and Field Championships this weekend in Albuquerque, N.M. Camarena-Williams is slated to compete in the shot put at 11:20 a.m. MT on Sunday, Feb. 26. Lagat is slated to run the 3,000-meter race on Saturday, Feb. 25 at 8:05 p.m. MT.
The women’s squad earned a runner-up finish at the MPSF Indoor Championships and a seventh-place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships. On the men’s side, the squad finished second at the MPSF Indoor Championships and 13th at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
The Wildcats head to Seattle this weekend looking to earn a point in State Farm Territorial Cup Rivalry Series. Should the UA women’s squad finish ahead of Arizona State’s women’s team, Arizona will take home the point. UA currently leads 4.5 to 2.5 in the 2011-12 head-to-head competition between the two schools, a point-based, 18-sport Cup series sponsored by State Farm. Arizona won the T-Cup Series the inaugural year by a score of 10.5 to 7.5, with the teams splitting the men's basketball point, and last year won the series by a score of 11.5 to 6.5 with the teams splitting the women's basketball contests.
