SUPER REGIONAL WEEKEND WHITE OUT

Your Arizona Baseball team is hosting a super regional for the first time in program history. What better time to head out to the ball park and cheer on the Cats as they play for a chance to return to Omaha and win our program’s fourth baseball national championship.

GREG’S TOP 10 WAYS TO STAY COOL

10. WHITE OUT – Wear a white Arizona shirt, stay cool, and help cheer on the Bat Cats to Omaha!

9.      Wear loose fitting khaki or light cotton pants – I started doing this at softball and baseball afternoon games and it really helps.

8.      Stay Hydrated – It's a good thing we can't sell beer! Water will be provided and hydrate before you come to the game.

7.      Use a Chilly Pad – Regina and I just bought one of these at Bed Bath & Beyond and they really work; or a wet towel around the neck helps too. We’ll be providing “cold towels” at our cooling station.

6.   Wear a bucket hat – Stay cool by not worrying if you look cool.

5.      Bring a spray bottle filled with ice water – Don’t be shy, cool down a neighbor in the stands.

4.   Wear sunglasses – They make you look cool and protect your eyes.

3.      Bring an umbrella – They provide great shade. Please be considerate of those around you.

2.      Use sunscreen, and plenty of it!  - Protect your exposed skin with sunscreen. We’ll also have sunscreen available at our cooling station.

1.      Visit the Cooling Station – We’ll have an area inside the park with fan misters, ice towels, and complimentary water, and sunscreen and to help keep you cool and hydrated. Bear Down!

As you can see we’re having some fun with the Weekend White Out, but we are serious about making sure our fans stay cool at this weekend’s Super Regional. We want fans wearing white to show unity and stay cool. We will have a cooling station set up on the east concourse (on the third base side) with complimentary water, misters, ice towels and sunscreen. This will be available from the time doors open (90 minutes prior to game time) through the game or while supplies last.

It’s an exciting time for our baseball program. St. John’s is a formidable opponent from the Big East and we need our crowd to provide a home field advantage. If you’re in the area, please try to come out to Hi Corbett and support these young men. Friday and Saturday’s games start at noon. If a third game is necessary, it will be Sunday at 1 p.m. We realize these start times are not ideal. So let’s not dwell on it, let’s embrace it! It’s a definite advantage for our guys and 100 degree afternoons are something us Tucsonans are used to. Plus a noon Super Regional Baseball game is a great place for a long lunch on Friday. Coach Lopez and I will even provide an excuse note to give to the boss! Just click here, print and fill in your name.

Reserved all-sessions sold out this morning! All-session general admission tickets are still available for $18 each and single-session general admission tickets went on sale tonight at 5 p.m on ArizonaWildcats.com. Single-session tickets will be available over phone or in person starting tomorrow at 9 a.m. And for you ZonaZoo students we’re offering a special deal on single-session general admission tickets. Students can purchase single-session general admission tickets for only $5, 50% off. The Athletic Department is picking up the rest of the cost. Students must purchase in person at the McKale Ticket Office or Hi Corbett Field Box Office and show their valid Cat Card.

Below is a photo slideshow our photographer Luke Adams put together from last weekend’s Regional. Take a look. It really got me fired up for this weekend’s Super Regional. Remember to wear white, stay cool and let’s help our Wildcats advance to the College World Series in Omaha…BEAR DOWN!

ALSO A BIG NCAA WEEKEND FOR TRACK AND FIELD

In another part of the country, Des Moines, Iowa, our men’s and women’s track and field teams will be well represented at the NCAA Championships today through Saturday to culminate outstanding seasons at venerated Drake Stadium. We have some superb opportunities to contend for half a dozen individual national titles and will run, throw and jump for some high team finishes. Go Cats!

SPRING SCHOLARS

Our academics services staff named six student-athletes of the month for March and April, citing Brigetta Barrett of women’s track and field, Karissa Buchanan of softball, Robin Chou of men’s tennis, C.J. Dozier offootball, Shannyn Hultin of women’s swimming and Dylan Kornberg of men’s golf. The staff periodically honors athletes whose work as students is exemplary in terms of effort, improvement, overall performance and personal integrity or serving as a role model. It’s a tough citation, coming among a population of some 450 student-athletes. Congratulations to these six and to all our students who make scholarly progress a great part of their daily regimen. Bear Down.

PAC-12 NETWORK UPDATE

There’s concern from satellite television subscribers that the soon-to-launch (August) Pac-12 Network hasn’t reached an agreement to be offered by several carriers including DirecTV and DISH Network. Negotiations continue between the league and those networks (and other entities) and Commissioner Larry Scott and Pac-12 Network leaders are confident they’ll reach an agreement. Much more information on this will be forthcoming, along with expected early word on the initial wave of football scheduling for games on league partners ESPN and FOX. It’s clear our league and all its sports will have more visibility than at any time in history. Stay tuned.

A-CLUB LETTERWINNER UPDATE

I would like to recognize Arizona gymnastics letterwoman Heidi Hornbeck ’00, who left the University of Arizona with two degrees and 38 awards to her name making her the most decorated gymnast in Arizona history. Heidi graduated from Still University/Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006 and currently is a general surgeon at the Halsted Clinic & Breast Center in Chandler. While at Arizona Heidi was a six-time All American, seven time All-Pac 10 selection and an NCAA Champion in 1996 for her floor routine.   Arizona Athletics is proud of Heidi’s accomplishments and we wish her continued success in her career…Bear Down!

NOTES…

We completed the final state leg of the 2012 Arizona Road Tour in Pinetop, Ariz., earlier this week. It’s great to see all of the Wildcats out there in the state and a few spots on the coast. Thanks for the warm receptions and for your interest in University of Arizona Athletics!...Congratulations to former Wildcats Donald Horton of football and Tiffany Owens of volleyball, who celebrated their wedding last month in Raleigh, N.C…Congratulations to men's basketball coach Sean Miller who won the "Shots From the Heart" free throw contest by defeating Ray McCallum of Detroit in the head coaches' tournament final...Here’s a recent look at the North End Zone Facility in Arizona Stadium. Contractors cleared the field as an equipment staging area to plant sod for the coming season, while the skeletal structure for the spectator seating area and the building itself are moving along on schedule…
