TUCSON, Ariz. – The No. 17 Arizona baseball team will host No. 6 UCLA this weekend in a pivotal three-game Pac-10 conference series at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium that begins on Friday at 6 p.m.
The Wildcats, who are 23-5 at home this season, will host a weekend full of promotions geared towards fans. On Friday, fans are invited to stay after the game for a post-game autograph session with the UA players. On Saturday, all military and public safety service members receive half-off admission to the game. On Sunday, UA hosts its annual “Bark in the Park” day, when fans can bring their furry friends to the game.
This weekend’s showdown between Wildcats and Bruins features two of the top teams not only in the Pac-10, but in the nation. UCLA has been ranked as high as No. 1 this season, while Arizona has surged up the rankings in recent weeks thanks to a sensational first half of the season that included an impressive 15-game home win streak.
The headlined matchup is sure to be Arizona’s offense against UCLA’s pitching staff. The Wildcats are the top offensive team with a .352 batting average, while the Bruins boast the league’s best pitching staff that has a 2.81 season ERA.
At the same time, Arizona’s staff has been pretty solid all season, with a 3.91 team ERA, which ranked No. 27 in the nation entering week. The Wildcats will send Kurt Heyer, who was named Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week following a 14-strikeout performance last weekend, to mound on Friday. Kyle Simon and Daniel Workman are scheduled to pitch Saturday and Sunday.
The Wildcats 27-9 overall record to open the season is their best since starting the 2007 with a 31-7 mark. Arizona, which has won nearly 80-percent of its home games in the last four seasons, will play 12 of its next 16 games at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium.
Fans wanting to attend this weekend’s games can do so by ordering in advance to avoid the game-day rush. Tickets are available through the McKale Ticket Office (520-621-CATS) and online. Fans who order online can choose the “Print at Home” option to print their tickets from their home computer before going to the game.
