(Click here for Lockwood family portrait) Lockwood was appointed by Rich Rodriguez in January and will coach cornerbacks in the Wildcats' new passing defense. He came to UA from West Virginia, where he was cornerbacks coach from 2008-11. He rejoined Rodriguez 22 years after first working together as entry-level coaches. He has extensive experience coaching on both sides of the ball. Prior to his work at his alma mater WVU, Lockwood was Kentucky defensive backs coach in 2007, Minnesota's defensive coordinator and linebackers coach in 2005-06 and Minnesota's secondary coach from 2002-04.
He coached cornerbacks at Notre Dame in 2001, defensive backs at West Virginia in 2000 and defensive backs at Memphis in 1999. He coached wide receivers at Memphis from 1995-98, tight ends and receivers at James Madison in 1994, and tight ends and receivers at Delaware from 1990-93. He began his career as a graduate assistant on the 1989 West Virginia team that Rodriguez served as a volunteer assistant the year before the latter began his head coaching career. He earned his bachelor's degree from WVU in 1989. Lockwood was a four-year letterman and defensive back at WVU from 1985-88 and a member of the 1984 Bluebonnet, 1987 Sun and 1988 Fiesta Bowl teams. He helped the Mountaineers to an undefeated regular season and national championship game as a senior. His units have recorded league-best interception totals (WVU '09), top 25 in pass defense (Kentucky '07, Memphis '99) and national No. 1 in turnover margin (Minnesota '06), among other highlights. He also helped coached both James Madison and Delaware to four NCAA 1-AA playoff appearances.
