TUCSON--The UA football team scrimmaged for about two hours Saturday with about 125 high school coaches in attendance, and the offense appeared ahead of the defense.
The Wildcats had five touchdowns on 65- or 50-yard fields and scored five more times on closer-in, overtime-style possessions from the 25 yard-line.
Quarterback Matt Scott completed 13 of 20 passes for 224 yards and a touchdown, while backup Richard Morrison saw only a few early plays in the practice portion of the session while nursing a sore shoulder. Reserve Tyler D'Amore completed 12 of 17 throws for 84 yards and a score and Alex Cappellini was 4-for-5 for 39 yards.
UA had some real success running the option, with six backs rushing 35 times for 242 yards and five, with cappellini adding another plunge on a keeper. Ka'Deem Carey led with three totes for 63 yards including a 60-yard scoring run, with Daniel Jenkins (5-42, TD), Greg Nwoko (4-43), Kylan Butler (9-37, two TD) and Taimi Tutogi (6-29, TD) also had moments.
Tyler Slavin was the leading receiver with nine receptions for 85 yards and a score, backed by Sean Willet (4-28), while Dan Buckner, Garic Wharton, Johnny Jackson and David Richards caught three balls apiece. Buckner had a 60-yard catch to set up a score, while Wharton and Willet each caught TD throws.
The scrimmage was marked by heavy involvement from nearly all players on hand. Rodriguez said afterward that coaches are still evaluating UA's talent before solidifying any kind of published pecking order, as in a depth chart.
High school coaches from Arizona, New Mexico, Texas and California were on hand for Rodrigtuez's first spring coaching clinic.
The Cats return to the practice field Monday and have seven sessions available by NCAA rule to wrap up spring ball.
