July 18, 2012
Arizona football junior Jake Fischer
was named a nominee for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, it was announced on Tuesday. In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization, service group or community service while maintaining a strong academic standing.
Fischer has a logged more than 30 hours of community service during his UA career, including hospital visits, Special Olympics events, yard work for the elderly and working at local food banks. He is the "go-to" person on the team if community service help is needed and often organizes and serves as the contact person for the football team.
In the class room, he holds a 3.395 GPA as a marketing major; was a 2010 first-team Pac-10 All-Academic honoree and likely would have repeated the honor during the 2011 season had he not redshirted the season.
He is back at full strength after missing 2011 while rehabilitating. He finished 2010 with 58 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss, two sacks, two PBUs and a fumble recovery in 13 games. He had a season and career-high seven hits against Cal and ASU with six apiece against Oklahoma State and USC. Fischer was named the Pac-10 Special Teams POW after 29-yard run on fake punt at UCLA. He lettered as a true freshman backup and special teams player in 2009, playing in all 13 games. He finished his first campaign with seven tackles (six solo) and a season-high two against both Central Michigan and WSU.
From the nominees submitted by sports information directors across the nation on behalf of their schools, a special voting panel consisting of former Allstate AFCA Good Works Team members and prominent college football media members will select two 11-player Good Works Teams - one comprised of players from the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision and another representing players from the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision, Divisions II, III, and the NAIA. The final roster of 22 award recipients will be unveiled in September.
Allstate and the AFCA will launch the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team website on ESPN.com featuring profiles and images of the final team members, as well as the opportunity for fans to vote for the 2012 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team Captain.
Arizona football will open the 2012 season on September 1, facing Toledo at 7:30 p.m. on ESPNU. Tickets are available at the McKale Center Ticket office, by visiting ArizonaWildcats.com or by calling 520-621-2287 or 1-800-452-CATS.
