Saturday's camp action included first official view of new gear in the morning and Day Three of fall practice in the afternoon.
TUCSON--The Arizona football team showed off its different color schemes for uniforms during the two-hour Media Day session Saturday morning at McKale Center.
UA will have the choice of blue over blue, red over white or its typical blue over white in its new home uniforms, and have the choice of white over white or white over blue on the road. The new Nike designs include some contrasting color swaths across the lower back of the jerseys, among other embellishments.
Senior offensive guard Kili Lefotu turned television intern for awhile, conducting some interviews for the local CBS affiliate, including a segment with coach Mike Stoops. When asked about the offensive line, Stoops joked to the camera it was going pretty well, except at Lefotu's position.
UA moved its afternoon practice from 6 p.m. to 2:30 in hopes of continuing to avoid Tucson's monsoon thunderstorms, which have arrived at the end of practices the first two days.
Arizona continues preparations for its season opener Sept. 2 at Utah, and will start two-a-days on Wednesday.
Fall Camp Practice No. 3
The Wildcats returned to the practice field Saturday afternoon for their third practice of fall camp at the Rincon Vista complex. The coaches continued to stress fundamentals as the players put on shoulder pads for the first time.
The team continued to work on basic individual drills, special teams, and went through two half-hour segments of 11-on-11 that focused primarily on pass offense and pass defense. Sophomore quarterback Richard Kovalcheck continued to take the majority of the snaps, with junior Adam Austin and freshman Willie Tuitama also seeing action.
After spending part of the morning media session as a news reporter, Lefotu returned to his more natural role as an offensive guard. Following practice, he commented on the adjustment of putting on the shoulder pads for the first time all summer.
“It was definitely a little hotter today with the pads on. You feel a bit heavier, but we got in a lot of good work. We might be a little bit sore, but we worked hard this summer so this isn’t bad.”
The team will receive a day off tomorrow before returning to the practice field on Monday. The workout is scheduled for 6 p.m., but could be moved up to earlier in the afternoon to avoid the monsoon thunderstorms.
