The Arizona football team had an afternoon practice on Wednesday during its bye week
Oct. 10, 2012
TUCSON, Ariz. – The Arizona football team completed practice at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. The Wildcats have a bye week before hosting Washington. Below is a brief transcript of head coach Rich Rodriguez’s comments following practice.
On the possibility of giving the freshmen a look during the bye week:
“We have been giving them a few reps yesterday and today. I like the young kids. We didn’t have whole lot of time to recruit a big class but I think there are some pretty good football players in that group. Some of them are playing before they are ready but I think some of them will really help us next year.”
On the lack of depth defensively:
“To have those guys play the number of plays the first few games is ridiculous. We knew where we were at coming in and the problems are fixable but I don’t know how soon. I hope sooner rather than later. I know we can fix them over time but we are trying to fix them as quick as we can.”
On the play of Justin Washington:
“He got quite a few plays in on Saturday and as long as he does what he is supposed to do, he’ll probably be staying in the rotation. He has been practicing pretty well.”
On Dan Pettinato:
“He is a big, tough guy. We needed some guys that could hold the point and Dan has battled some injuries all year, but he is healthy now and has done a really good job. He is a strong guy that is young too, but he got to play a little last year, so he has some experience.”
On the plans for this Saturday:
“I will do a little work – I have some film to watch. The players have off but I will be with the wife and kids, watching a lot football. Night games are nice but you are so consumed with your own game that you don’t really get to enjoy the other games.”
The Wildcats will return to action on Saturday, October 20 when they host Washington at 7 p.m. inside Arizona Stadium. The will be broadcast live on the Pac-12 Networks.
