Dec. 9, 2012
University of Arizona associate head coach and co-offensive coordinator Calvin Magee
has been named the 2012 FootballScoop Running Backs Coach of the Year, presented by ProGrass, it was announced on Sunday.
Magee pilots an Arizona offense that hasn't ranked lower than 12th nationally and third in the Pac-12 this season. The Wildcats led the Pac-12 in total offense for four-straight weeks (weeks 6-9) and ranked as high as fourth nationally in weeks 3, 7, and 9. Arizona's offensive triple-threat attack features a 3,000-yard passer (Matt Scott - 3,238 yards), a 1,500-yard rusher (Ka'Deem Carey - 1,757 yards) and a 1,000-yard receiver (Austin Hill - 1,189 yards). The trio is the first of its kind in Arizona history, a school that has only once had a 1,000-yard rushing and 1,000-yard receiving tandem in the same season (Trung Canidate and Dennis Northcutt in 1999).
Magee guided Carey to a 1,700-yard, All-America season. Already named to six different All-America teams, including Walter Camp and The Sporting News, Carey leads the nation in rushing yards per game (146.42), rank No. 2 nationally in total rushing yardage (1,757), leads the nation in total yards from scrimmage (2,045) and ranks second nationally in yards from scrimmage per game (170.4).
Carey's 54 plays of 10+ yards and his 20 plays of 20+ yards also lead the nation. His 21 total touchdowns (20 rush, one rec.) rank No. 8 nationally and his 20 rushing touchdowns rank seventh nationally.
A 23-year coaching veteran, Magee joined Rich Rodriguez's staff at Arizona in December 2011. He served as Pittsburgh's offensive coordinator for the 2011 season, was Michigan's offensive coordinator from 2008-10 and spent the 2001-07 seasons at West Virginia. He got his collegiate coaching start at South Florida from 1996-2000. Magee has coached in eight bowl games with his ninth on the horizon for the Arizona squad.
The FootballScoop Coaches of the Year awards, presented by ProGrass, are the only set of awards that recognize the most outstanding position coaches in college football. The finalists were selected based off of nominations by coaches, athletic directors and athletic department personnel. The prior winners selected this year's winner. Magee will receive his award and be recognized at an event at the AFCA Convention in January.
The Wildcats will take on the Nevada Wolf Pack on Sat., Dec. 15 at the Gildan New Mexico Bowl. The game will air at 11 a.m. MT on ESPN.
