TUCSON-Ariz.- For the second straight tournament Arizona's Men's Golf team finished third, and had an individual finish second overall. The last event saw Arizona stumble to these figures: the Cats dropped two places to finish third, and Tarquin MacManus surrendered his second round lead to fall into second place. This time around, Arizona was tied for sixth and Tyler Neal was tied for 25th. A miraculous third round helped the Wildcats to a third place finish, and catapulted Neal 23 spots on the leader board.
Four teams had a better third round than the Oregon Ducks, but their second round lead proved to be insurmountable as they cruised to a comfortable seven stroke win. Behind the club of Nate Page, who won the event and was the only golfer to finish under par, Southern Utah was able to hold off the third round charge of the Cats, and grab second place by one stroke. Arizona shot the second lowest round of the tournament, 88 (E) and finished at 883 (+19). Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly tied for fourth at 887 (+23)
Page, 215 (-1) who began the day in a tie for fourth place, shot a 69 (-3) to grab the win. Two stokes behind him was a five way tie for second. This tie included Oregon's top golfer Robbie Ziegler and Tyler Neal. Day one leader Tai Reynolds of Southern Utah finished 16th after shooting a disappointing 78 (+6) in the final round.
Neal's second place finish was his best of the season and his third top 10 finish. Brad Nicholson, who was in a tie for 21st heading into the day and looking for his first top 20 finish of the year, finished one stroke outside of that achievement. He shot a 223 (+7), putting him in a tie for 22nd. Tarquin MacManus joined Nicholson in that six man tie. Jonathan Khan and Rich Saferian were tied for 37th after day one, and continued their congruent scores in the final round where they finished tied for 28th. Competing as an individual, Phil Bagdade shot a 230 (+14) and tied for 52nd.
The tournament was contested at Oak Valley Golf Club in Beaumont, Calif., a par 72, 6,960 course.
The Cats will be in action again March 13-15 in the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship in Las Vegas, Nev.
