TUCSON, Ariz. - After opening the tournament with its lowest 18-hole score of the season, the Arizona men's golf team is in seventh place in the team standings following two rounds of the Don Puckette National Invitational Tournament at the Omni Tucson National Golf Club on Saturday.
As a team, Arizona opened the first round with a blistering 11-under 277 - a season-low team score for the Wildcats. It was also their lowest 18-hole team score in the event's history, breaking their previous mark of 278 from 2003. Arizona totaled a 297 in round number two on the 7,200-yard, par-72 layout to finish at 574 (-2) overall.
Oklahoma State leads the team competition with a two round total of 559 (-17). The Cowboys hold a slim one-shot lead on TCU (-16). New Mexico (-11), San Diego State (-10) and Arkansas (-7) round out the top-five.
Individually, the Wildcats were led by Erik Oja and Juan Pablo Hernandez. Oja fired an impressive opening round of 66 (-6) before carding a second round score of 76 (+4) to compile a 142 (-2). The 66 matches his career-low round which he also recorded March 5, 2012 at the Fresno Lexus Classic and it also goes down as the lowest 18-hole round by a Wildcat this season. Meanwhile, Hernandez followed up an opening round 69 with a second round 73. Oja and Hernandez are in a tie for 15th place on the individual leaderboard.
Julien Brun of TCU put two very impressive rounds together to take the individually lead. Brun opened with 68 before following that up with a 65. The two-round total of 133 (-11) puts him in front by three shots. Ian Davis of Oklahoma State is second (69-67=136) with Ben Crancer of Texas A&M (67-70=137) and Thomas Sorensen of Arkansas (70-67=137) in third.
Arizona sophomore Alex McMahon is tied for 23rd with a solid even-par (74-70=144) total. Trent Redfern and Dylan Healy both got off to strong starts in the opening round but as the wind picked up, they both struggled a bit in their second round. Redfern is tied for 56th (70-79=149) and Healy is tied for 62nd (72-78=150).
Meanwhile, playing as an individual, Nick Olsgaard is tied for 32nd (75-70=145) thanks to a solid 2-under 70 in the second round.
The 54-hole Don Puckette National Invitational Tournament will conclude tomorrow with 18 holes of play beginning at 8:00 a.m. Live tournament results will be available at golfstat.com.
