TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona men's golf team finished in second place Tuesday at the Itani Quality Homes Collegiate in Pullman, Wash.
Led by four players in the top-20 places individually, the Wildcats posted a one-under 287 and finished the 11-team event in second place with an 887 (+23) total. UA's final-round tally was its lowest of the tournament and solidified the team's first top-five finish in fall competition since October 2008.
Arizona finished 12 strokes behind host-Washington State, who carded an 11-over 875 total. San Jose State (890) and Cal State Fullerton (902) finished in third and fourth places, respectively.
Playing in his first collegiate event, UA's Dylan Healy, a freshman from Brentwood, Tenn., finished the tournament in a tie for second place after carding a final-round 74. Healey's 217 (+1) total put him four strokes behind individual medalist Hank Frame of Washington State.
Senior Trent Redfern, who played the final two rounds at one-under par, posted a 222 total (+6) to finish in a tie for eighth place and earn his second career top-10 finish. The Austin, Texas, native's final-round 71 was his low round of the tournament.
Junior Erik Oja and senior Juan Pablo Hernandez each collected top-20 finishes, tying for 15th and 19th places, respectively. Oja, fired a final-round 70, UA's low round of the day, en route to a 227 (+11) total, while Hernandez registered an even-par 72 to finish at 228 (+12).
Benson Liu finished in a tie for 40th place at 17-over 233, while two other Wildcats - Dylan Kornberg and Ricky Lee -competed in the event as individuals. Kornberg tied for 50the place at 236, five shots and six places ahead of Lee.
The 54-hole Itani Quality homes Collegiate was contested at the Palouse Ridge Golf Club, a par-72, 7,308-yard layout. The facility will host an NCAA men's golf regional in May 2013.
Arizona next will be in action, Sept. 28-29, at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
