TUCSON, Ariz. - With a pair of players in the top 20, the University of Arizona men's golf team sits in seventh place Sunday after the first round of the Lone Star Invitational in San Antonio, Texas.
Senior Trent Redfern and junior Erik Oja both are tied for 18th place after the first 18 holes, helping the Wildcats to a nine-over 297 tally that put the club in seventh position. While the Wildcats notched 14 birdies on the day, consistent scoring proved difficult on the Hill Country Resort Golf Course.
"The course offers a lot of scoring opportunities," said UA head coach Jim Anderson. "While we executed and converted on some birdie chances, we are still battling mistakes and big numbers. Fortunately, it looks like a great round tomorrow can get us back into contention. We will adjust a few items after seeing the course again and stick to our aggressive game plan."
North Texas leads the 15-team event by three shots after carding a four-under 284 total in round one. Denver (287), and host UTSA (290) are in second and third, places, respectively, while Texas State (293) and Central Arkansas (293) are tied for fourth.
Redfern and Oja continued their runs of solid play, as each posted a one-over 73 Sunday to find themselves in the top-20 places. Redfern posted a career-low, two-under 214 tally, Oct. 8-9, in his last event, while Oja has a pair of top-20 finishes in Arizona previous three fall events.
Freshman Dylan Healey is tied for 24th place at two-over 74, two strokes ahead of teammate Tucker Wadkins, who is tied for 49th place at four-over 76. Wadkins is competing in this event as an individual.
Sophomore Alex McMahon is tied for 55th place at five-over 77, while sophomore Brenden Redfern is tied for 71st place at nine-over 81.
The 54-hole Lone Star Invitational continues through Tuesday at the Hill Country Resort Golf Course, a par-72, 6,931-yard layout.
