MacManus Finishes Second at Southern Amateur

TUCSON, Ariz. - Former University of Arizona men's golfer Tarquin MacManus finished in a tie for second place at the 105th Southern Amateur Championship Sunday in Palm Harbor, Fla. MacManus carded rounds of 73, 67, 66 and 72 to finish the 72-hole event with a 10-under total of 278. He finished three strokes behind Harris English, who posted a 275 (-13) total. A native of Cairns, Queensland, Australia, who just completed his collegiate eligibility, MacManus led the Wildcats with a 72.82 scoring average and was UA's top finisher in seven of 15 appearances. He had five top-10 finishes to his credit in 2010-11 and 15 of his 44 rounds played were at par or better, including eight rounds in the 60s with a low of 65. Earlier this season, MacManus posted an 11-under 205 to finish third at the Topy Cup and an eight-under 202 to win the Wyoming Cowboy Classic. He was a second team all-Pac-10 selection in 2008, 2009 and 2011, and earned postseason accolades - all-conference, all-region or All-American -- in each of his four seasons with the program. He finished his career with a 72.41 stroke average in 54 career appearances, an average that ranks fourth all-time in Arizona history. Additionally. MacManus' 162 career collegiate rounds played ranks 11th in UA annals. The run at the Southern Amateur continued a strong year for MacManus in amateur golf circles worldwide. He won the Australian Master of the Amateurs tournament, Jan. 12, at Royal Melbourne's West Course, using six birdies on the final 10 holes to post a six-under 65 and a record 12-under-par tally to win by three shots. Additionally, the Aussie collected a runner-up finish with a 10-under total at the Asian Amateur Championship, Oct. 10, at Kasumigaseki Country Club's West Course outside Tokyo.
