McMahon Qualifies for U.S. Amateur Championship
July 26, 2012
TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's golfer Alex McMahon will compete in the 2012 United States Amateur Championship, Aug. 13-19, at Cherry Hills Country Club in Cherry Hills Village, Colo.
McMahon, a sophomore-to-be this fall, earned his spot by finishing second in the sectional qualifier at Marin Country Club in Novato, Calif., on July 17. He carded a 71-75=146 (+2) tally and was one of three players to advance from that qualifier.
"This is huge," McMahon told the Marin Independent Journal. "I'm really excited; I'm going to the biggest amateur tournament in the world."
A native of Oro Valley, Ariz., McMahon ranked sixth on the team last year with a 74.82 stroke average. He posted four rounds at par or better with a low round of 71 and collected one top-20 finish. Three of his spring appearances came with the UA varsity and four of those nine rounds (44 percent) counted towards the team total.
The 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship will be contested over the Cherry Hill C.C. course and the Common Ground Golf Course in Aurora, Colo. Both courses are par 71, while Cherry Hills covers 7,466 yards and Common Ground covers 7,000 yards.
Two rounds of stroke play will be contested Aug. 13-14 before the field is cut to the low 64 scores for match play.
