TUCSON, Ariz. - Four University of Arizona men's golfers advanced to the match play portion of the 88th Arizona Amateur Championship Tuesday at The Gallery Golf Course in Marana, Ariz.
Ricky Lee, Dylan Kornberg, Alex McMahon and Benson Liu each finished in the top 64 places after two days of stroke play with two of those players - Lee and Kornberg - finishing in the top 10 places.
Lee, a native of Tucson, carded rounds of 72 and 67 to finish with a five-under tally of 139, which ranked him second among the field of 147 players. Seeded second in the match play portion, Lee will face 63rd-seeded Will Twitty in the first round.
Kornberg, also a Tucson native, tied for sixth place in stroke play qualifying, posting a 71-70=141 (-3) total. He is seeded sixth in match play and will face 59th-seeded Michael Bosco in the first round of match play.
McMahon and Liu tied for 46th place at three-over 147. McMahon, a native of Oro Valley, Ariz., registered rounds of 76 and 71, while Liu tallied a 74 and 72.
McMahon, who earlier this summer qualified for the 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship, is seeded 50th in the match play portion and will face 15th-seeded Colton in Wednesday's first round. Liu, seeded 51st, will face 14the-seeded Todd Sapiro.
One other Wildcat golfer, Ben Esparza, competed in the stroke play portion of the event but did not qualify for match play.
The 2012 Arizona Amateur Championship is being contested at The Gallery's North Course, a par-72, 7,300-yard layout. The event runs through Saturday.
