Ricky Barnes Wins 2002 U.S. Amateur Championship
Aug. 25, 2002
BLOOMFIELD HILLS, Mich. - University of Arizona senior Ricky Barnes captured one of golf's most prestigious events as he won the 2002 United States Amateur Championship Sunday afternoon at historic Oakland Hills Country Club.
Barnes, a native of Stockton, Calif., defeated Hunter Mahan of McKinney, Texas, 2 and 1. He clinched the amateur national championship with a delicate chip shot to within six inches on the 35th hole of the final. Mahan conceded the putt to give Barnes the victory in the 102nd edition of the U.S. Amateur Championship.
Barnes' short game was key all week and on display Sunday as he tallied just one bogey in 35 holes of Sunday's scheduled 36-hole final. "Right now, I'm just going to enjoy this," Barnes told NBC's Jimmy Roberts. "It was hard out there. I was able to manage the pressure by talking to people during the round and drinking a lot of water. Did I think it was possible to win it? Yes. Did I believe it? No."
It was the second pairing of the week for Barnes and Mahan, who also played together during the stroke play portion of the event. Barnes was also able to turn the tables on his Oklahoma State University foe, as it was Mahan who eliminated Barnes in the second round of the 2000 U.S. Amateur at Baltusrol, 3 and 2.
Barnes, who also participated in the 2002 U.S. Open Championship, earns exemptions to play in the 2003 Masters, United States and British Open Championships. He is the second University of Arizona golfer to win the U.S. Amateur Championship, joining Eric Meeks, who won the 1988 U.S. Amateur at Hot Springs Golf and Country Club in Hot Springs, W.V.
Barnes was one of four current Wildcats competing in this United States Golf Association championship event. Also participating in the Amateur were sophomore Steven Eshbach, senior Reid Hatley and junior Chris Nallen.
Barnes and the Wildcats open the 2002-03 campaign Sept. 13-14 at the William H. Tucker Intercollegiate in Albuquerque, N.M.
