Furyk, U.S. Open Ryder Cup Challenge
Sept. 26, 2012
TUCSON, Ariz. - As the United States attempts to reclaim the Ryder Cup this weekend in suburban Chicago, former Wildcat and current PGA professional Jim Furyk once again will be in the middle of the action.
A captain's pick by Davis Love III, Furyk will be making his eighth consecutive Ryder Cup appearance, which means that he will be among the most experienced players on the 12-man U.S. roster after helping his side to victories in 1999 and 2008.
With 27 Cup matches under his belt, Furyk, who has represented the U.S. in every Ryder Cup meeting since 1997, trails only Phil Mickelson (34) and Tiger Woods (29) in terms of Ryder Cup match experience. He has an 8-15-4 overall record in Ryder Cup competition, including a 4-2-1 record in singles play, and has collected 10 Ryder Cup points in his career.
Furyk, a member of the Arizona men's golf team from 1988-92, has been a member of the PGA Tour since 1993. In that span, he has won 16 PGA Tour events, including the 2003 U.S. Open, and claimed seven top-10 finishes and more than $3.4 million in earnings in 2012.
While at Arizona, Furyk was a member of Arizona's 1992 national championship team. He was a two-time All-American and a three-time all-Pac-10 selection. His 176 career rounds played ranks fourth in Arizona history. A Mary J. Roby Academic Award winner in 1989 and 1991, Furyk was inducted into the University of Arizona Sports Hall of Fame in 1997.
"Jim Furyk is an outstanding representative of the University of Arizona and our golf program," said UA head coach Jim Anderson. "His participation in the Ryder Cup is phenomenal for our program and the team. Jim shows that our student-athletes are achieving success after college at the very highest levels for sustained periods of time. He is one of the game's all-time greats and I'm sure he will "Bear Down" for the USA this weekend."
The 39th Ryder Cup matches will take place Sept. 28-30 at Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Ill. The U.S. leads the all-time Ryder Cup standings, 25-11-2.
