LOS ANGELES -
Arizona’s No. 1-ranked men’s swimming team will travel to Los Angeles to compete in the 2012 Pac-12 Championships, beginning Wednesday, Feb. 29 and continuing through Saturday, March 4.
Competition will begin with the 200 Medley Relay and 800 Free Relay finals at 6 p.m. PT on Wednesday at East Los Angeles Community College.
The Wildcats have not lost a dual meet this season and have competed against some of the top teams in the country, including No. 2 Texas, No. 3 Stanford, No. 5 USC, No. 6 California and No. 14 Iowa.
Five individual Arizona swimmers and the Wildcats’ 400 medley relay team currently have the fastest times in the country. Senior Cory Chitwood (Union, Ky.) leads the country in the 200 backstroke and the 200 IM, senior Austen Thompson (Chandler, Ariz.) in the 400 IM, junior Carl Mickelson (Chandler, Ariz.) in the 200 breaststroke, sophomore Mitchell Friedemann (Allenton, Wis.) in the 100 backstroke, freshman Kevin Cordes (Naperville, Ill.) in the 100 breaststroke.
Seven additional times are in the top-five in the country and five more are in the top 10 (list below).
In 2011, the Wildcats placed fourth behind Stanford, California and USC.
Senior divers Ben Grado (Conifer, Colo.) and Andres Guerra (Sugarland, Texas) participated in the Pac-12 Championships last week in Federal Way, Wash. Grado won all three events and Guerra posted a second-place finish on the platform and seventh on the 1m.
