The Arizona Wildcat men’s tennis team sent four players to compete in the 2012 Aztec Invite hosted by San Diego State University. Mario Urquidi, Kieren Thompson, Carlos Bermudez and Matt Dunn are representing the Cats at Aztec Tennis Center.

Friday’s play set Dunn to compete for third place in Flight B singles and advanced both of Arizona’s doubles teams to quarterfinal play.

In Flight A consolation singles, Thompson played Freddy Gelbrich from San Diego State. The junior from Brisbane, Australia claimed the match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The win will advance him to Flight A consolation semifinals where he will face off against Andrew Raphaelson from USD.

Friday’s results had Urquidi set to play Andrew Malozask from UC San Diego, but Urquidi opted to sit out singles play to focus on doubles competition.

In Flight B singles, Dunn battled Roy Brandys from Sacramento State for the third place title. The freshman from Tucson narrowly won the first set, 7-5, and the two continued to battle as the second set entered a tiebreaker. Dunn came out on top and clinched the second set, 7-6 (5), earning him the Flight B third place title.

In Flight B Singles consolation, Bermudez played Henrik Raag from Sacramento State. Bermudez dominated the first set, defeating Raag 6-0. Raag attempted a comeback in the second set but Bermudez held him to three wins to claim the set, 6-3. The win advances him to the semifinals where he will play Tom Miller, also from Sacramento State.

In doubles action, Thompson and Dunn teamed up to play Spencer Simon and Gelbrich from San Diego State. The Arizona duo defeated Simon and Gelbrich, 8-4 , to advance to the semifinals where they took on Jonny Wang and Max de Vroome from USC. The Arizona team was topped, 8-5, to end their doubles run.

Bermudez and Urquidi played Aliaksandr Malko and Merek Marksoo from Sacramento State in doubles quarterfinals. Bermudez and Urquidi were edged, 8-4, dropping them off of the doubles draw.
