The Arizona Wildcat men’s tennis team sent four players to the USTA/ITA Southwest Regional Championships in Irvine, Calif. Giacomo Miccini, Kieren Thompson, Andre Vidaller, and Sumeet Shinde are representing Arizona at UC Irvine’s Recreation Center and Anteater Tennis Stadium.

The day began with doubles play where Miccini and Vidaller had a bye in the round of 64. The bye sets them to play Devin Barber and Derek Klein from Cal Poly. Shinde and Thompson teamed up to take on Luis Gastao and Jimmy Roberts of UC Riverside. The Arizona duo dominated the match, 8-1, and advance to play No. 4 seeded Jonathan Brooklyn and Dmytro Kovalyav from Hawaii in the round of 32.

In singles action, Vidaller and Shinde each had a bye in the round of 128 while Thompson and Miccini secured wins to advance.

Thompson took on Andrianik Khachatryan from San Diego State, the Brisbane, Australia native defeated Khachatryan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. In round of 64 play, Thompson played 10th seeded Erich Johnson from USC. Thompson was edged, 6-0, 6-1.

Miccini played Justin Agbvani from hosting UC Irvine, the Arizona junior dominated the match, holding Agbvani to three wins in two sets, to claim the win, 6-2, 6-1. Next, Miccini took on ninth seeded Clarke Spinosa from San Diego. The Recanati, Italy native fought a close first set but was topped, 7-5. In the second set, Miccini fell, 6-2, as Spinosa claimed the match.

In round of 64 play, Vidaller battled Chas Okamoto from Hawaii. The Arizona junior was topped, 6-4, in the first set but fought his way back to clinch the next two sets, 7-5, 7-5. The win sets him to play No. 14 Romain Kalaydijan from San Diego on Saturday.

Shinde took on Fred Gelbrich from San Diego State in his first singles match of the tournament. The sophomore from Pune, India claimed a close first set, 7-5, and held Gelbrich to three wins in the second set to claim the match, 6-3. With the win, Shinde advances to the round of 32 where he will play Cal Poly’s Naveen Beasley .
