Match Data: The Wildcats (5-0, 0-0 Pac-12) will take their first road trip of the season as they travel to San Diego, Calif. to play the San Diego Toreros (3-2, 0-0 WCC).
Skip and Cindy Hogan Tennis Center: Saturday’s match will be held on San Diego’s home courts. The eight-court facility has a concrete substructure and surface. The San Diego Athletics Department has received grants to make improvements such as lighted courts, electronic scoring and a quality sound system.
Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz enters his ninth season as the head coach of the Wildcats. During the 2008-09 season he was named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and the Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year. He joined the program in 2004 and has held numerous national and collegiate coaching positions. He was promoted to the head coaching position in the spring of 2005 after serving as hall-of-famer Bill Wright's assistant. Berkowitz was a top collegiate player for the Universities of Kentucky and New Mexico, respectively.
Super Seven: Arizona returns seven players from the 2011-2012 season. Juniors Giacomo Miccini, Kieren Thompson, Mario Urquidi, and Andre Vidaller return as the most experienced members of the team. Sophomores Carlos Bermudez, Robin Chou and Sumeet Shinde also return as key contributors.
Fresh Four: The Wildcats welcome four new players to the 2013 roster. Freshman
Matt Dunn joined the team in the fall along with sophomore transfer
Ben Lee. Joining the team at the start of the spring season are freshman
Naoki Takeda and junior transfer
Fredrik Ask.
Last Time Out: The Cats marked two in the win column as they hosted the St. Mary’s Gaels in two matches. On Friday, the Cats swept play en rout to a 7-0 victory. On Saturday, Arizona earned two doubles matches and three singles matches and called the remaining singles matches in a 4-0 victory.
The Series vs. San Diego: This will be the 28th meeting of the two schools with Arizona holding the 19-8 all-time advantage. The Last Meeting: On Feb. 17, 2012 the Cats hosted the Toreros at LaNelle Robson Tennis Center. Arizona dropped the doubles point winning only the match on court two. In singles play, the Wildcats fell on all six courts.
Scouting the Toreros: Last Weekend, San Diego traveled to play Arizona’s Pac-12 foe No. 3-ranked UCLA. San Diego fell on all three doubles courts but claimed singles matches on courts three and four in a 5-2 loss. San Diego is currently ranked at No. 26.
