Last Time Out: The Wildcats opened Pac-12 play against Stanford and California. In Friday’s match against then No.8-ranked Stanford, Arizona dropped the doubles point, losing all three matches and went on to win two singles matches in a 5-2 decision. Earning Arizona’s two points of the day were sophomore Kieren Thompson on court five and freshman Sumeet Shinde on court three. On Sunday, the Cats play then No. 12-ranked California. The Bears swept doubles play and Arizona went on to win two singles matches in the second 5-2 decision of the weekend. Earning Arizona’s first singles win of the day was freshman Carlos Bermudez who won his match in straight sets on court four. Shinde earned his second singles win of the weekend with a dramatic three set victory on court three.
LaNelle Robson Tennis Center: This weekend’s matches will be held on Arizona’s home courts. LaNelle Robson Tennis Center was dedicated in 1991 and is home to 17 lit courts, a center-court grandstand and a permanent canopy over the stands.
Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Wildcats. During the 2008-09 season he was named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and the Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year. Last season, he led the Wildcats to a 9-14 overall record. He joined the program in 2004 and has held numerous national and collegiate coaching positions. He was promoted to the head coaching position in the spring of 2005 after serving as hall-of-famer Bill Wright's assistant. Berkowitz was a top collegiate player for the Universities of Kentucky and New Mexico, respectively.
Arizona returns five players from the 2010-2011 season. Junior Frank Chen
will be looked to as a leader this season as he boasts the most colligate tennis experience on the team. Sophomores Giacomo Miccini
, Kieren Thompson
, Mario Urquidi
, and Andre Vidaller
also bring their knowledge and experience to the court.
Fresh Four: The Wildcats welcome four freshmen to the 2011-12 roster. Joining the team before the fall season were Carlos Bermudez and Robin Chou. Adding to the four are Sebastian Ionescu and Sumeet Shinde who joined the team in the spring. All four could play vital roles in both singles and doubles action this season.
Friday’s Match Data: The Wildcats (5-12, 0-2 Pac-12) will host the No. 5-ranked UCLA Bruins (16-2, 2-0 Pac-12).
Scouting the Bruins: Last weekend, UCLA opened Pac-12 play on the road, against Oregon and then No. 22-ranked Washington. Against Oregon, UCLA claimed the doubles point with wins on courts two and three and went on to sweep singles competition in a 7-0 victory. Against Washington, UCLA swept doubles play and went on to win singles matches on courts two, four, five and six.
The Last Meeting: On April 8 2011, the Cats dropped a 6-0 decision to the Bruins at Los Angeles Tennis Center. UCLA swept singles competition and doubles was not played.
Saturday’s Match Data: The Wildcats (5-12, 0-2 Pac-12) continue Pac-12 play at home as they host the No.1-ranked USC Trojans (21-0, 2-0 Pac-12).
Scouting the Trojans: Last weekend, USC earned two 7-0 victories over then No. 22-ranked Washington and Oregon. Against Washington, The Trojans swept both doubles and singles competition in Seattle. The following day, USC made another clean sweep of the competition when the played Oregon in Eugene. Before heading to Arizona, the Trojans will travel to Utah to play the Utes on Friday.
The Last Meeting: On April 9, 2011, Arizona dropped a 6-1 decision to the Trojans at Marks Stadium in Los Angeles. USC swept doubles competition and went on to win five of six singles matches. Earning Arizona’s only point of the day was Kieren Thompson on court five.
