Pac-12 Season: The Wildcats ended the season winless in Pac-12 play but were able to secure singles wins in six of seven matches. The Cats started out the season hosting Stanford and California. Arizona dropped both matches, 5-2. The following weekend, Arizona hosted UCLA and USC but fell 6-1 in both matches. Next, the Wildcats took their only road trip of the conference season to Oregon and Washington. Oregon topped the Cats, 6-1, and Washington was the only team to blank the Cats. In their final match of the season, the Cats fell, 5-2, to Utah in Tucson.
Arizona Head Coach Tad Berkowitz enters his seventh season as the head coach of the Wildcats. During the 2008-09 season he was named the Pac-10 Men's Tennis Coach of the Year and the Wilson/ITA West Region Coach of the Year. Last season, he led the Wildcats to a 9-14 overall record. He joined the program in 2004 and has held numerous national and collegiate coaching positions. He was promoted to the head coaching position in the spring of 2005 after serving as hall-of-famer Bill Wright's assistant. Berkowitz was a top collegiate player for the Universities of Kentucky and New Mexico, respectively.
Fabulous Five: Arizona returns five players from the 2011-12 season. Junior Frank Chen will be looked to as a leader this season as he boasts the most colligate tennis experience on the team. Sophomores Giacomo Miccini, Kieren Thompson, Mario Urquidi, and Andre Vidaller also bring their knowledge and experience to the court.
The Wildcats welcome four freshmen to the 2011-12 roster. Joining the team before the fall season were Carlos Bermudez
and Robin Chou
. Adding to the four are Sebastian Ionescu
and Sumeet Shinde
who joined the team in the spring. All four could play vital roles in both singles and doubles action this season.
