MALIBU, Calif. –Arizona’s Roger Matalonga advanced to the ITA South West Regional Final before falling to the No. 1-seeded Ben Kohlloeffel from UCLA. Kohlloeffel defeated the third-seeded Matalonga in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.

To reach the final, Matalonga won five matches, including two over seeded players. He defeated Pepperdine’s ninth-seeded Richard Johnson in the quarterfinals and then overcame their second-seeded Rico Pedro in the semifinals.

“Roger proved once again this weekend that he can beat anybody in the country and after playing a few fall tournaments that he is a legitimate top player in the country,” said Head coach Tad Berkowitz.

Matalonga was not the only Wildcat to reach a finals match. Bruno Alcala lost his first match before winning four consecutive matches to reach the consolation finals. Berkowitz felt that overall the tournament was a good experience and that the team performed well.

“We got solid results at the regional; each guy, individually, had some success. They all did a good job as far as competing, the one thing that is great for them and keeps improving is their belief that they can compete at a high level,” said Berkowitz.

The Wildcats will be in action again next weekend in the ASU Invitational hosted by Arizona State University. The tournament begins Friday, October 28.
