2011:
REND LAKE COMMUNITY COLLEGE (Ina, Illinois)
One of the most prized recruits coming out of Junior College, Sambu managed to make a name for himself, immediately making an impact on the national distance scene while competing for two years at Rend Lake Community College in Southern Illinois. Stephen managed All-American status on multiple occasions at the NJCAA Indoor and Outdoor National Championships. In 2009 at the NJCAA Indoor National Championships, Stephan placed All-American in the 3k and Mile runs while taking the title in the 5k at 14:55.99. Following that for the 2009 Outdoor NJCAA Championships, Stephen took home the 5k and 10k national titles, running 14:22.39 and 30:53.32
The next year, Sambu again achieved multiple All-American JUCO Honors Indoors at the 2010 NJCAA Indoor Championships, finishing 2nd in the Mile and winning both the 3k and 5k titles. Outdoors, Sambu racked up his titles again, defending his 5k and 10k titles - running 15:04.12 and 30:26.60
