TUCSON, Ariz. -
Head coach Niya Butts and the Arizona women’s basketball team will welcome BYU to McKale Center on Tuesday, Nov. 19 at 11 a.m. for the annual field trip game.
The Cougars, under 12th-year head coach Jeff Judkins, were picked to win the West Coast Conference. Three players were named to the WCC All-Conference preseason team, including sophomore Lexi Eaton, junior Jennifer Hamson and senior Haley Steed. BYU returns 10 letterwinners and welcomes seven newcomers to a team that went 26-7 in 2011-12.
In their four games, two players are averaging double scoring figures as Flowers is averaging 19.3 points and Kim Beeston is averaging 12.3 points. Morgan Bailey leads the team in rebounding average at 6.3.
The two teams met at the Hukilau Invitational on Dec. 1, 2011, where BYU handed Arizona its first loss of the season, 82-73. Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the team with 19 points, while junior Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.) added 17. As a team, The Wildcats had 21 turnovers to BYU's 19 and matched the Cougars in rebounding with 35 each. UA shot 45.8 percent from the field (27-59), 37.5 percent from three-point range (6-16) and 81.3 percent from the charity stripe (13-16).
BYU leads the all-time series with Arizona, 6-5, with a 2-3 mark in Tucson, in a series dating back to 1973.
The Wildcats are coming off a win over CSU Northridge to improve their record to 3-0 on the season. Whyte and junior Alli Gloyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the team in points with 16 and 12, respectively. In the game, UA forced 25 turnovers, with all but one player recording at least one steal and outrebounded the Matadors, 55 to 37.
