Head coach Niya Butts and the Arizona women’s basketball team (3-1, 0-0) traveled to The Bahamas on Wednesday to compete in the Junkanoo Jam.
The Wildcats will play two opponents in the tournament, including UTEP on Friday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. ET and Texas Southern on Saturday, Nov. 24 at 2:30 p.m. ET.
The UTEP Miners (4-0), led by 12th-year head coach Keitha Adams, are coming off a 60-54 victory over Arizona State on Sunday. The Miners are led by senior center Kristine Vitola, who is averaging 16.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game.
Arizona leads the all-time series with UTEP, 10-3, including a seven-game winning streak, in a series dating back to 1975. The Wildcats won the only neutral-site matchup in the series in 1983.
The Texas Southern Tigers (1-2), led by first-year head coach Cynthia Cooper-Dyke, are coming off a 68-53 win over Norfolk State on Sunday. The Lady Tigers are led by freshman guard Breonna Johnson, who is averaging 9.0 points per game and freshman guard Te’era Williams, who is averaging 8.7 rebounds per game.
The Wildcats and Texas Southern have only met one time in history, a game UA won, 96-46 in Tucson.
UTEP and Texas Southern will kick off the tournament on Thursday, Nov. 22.
Arizona is coming off its first loss of the season to BYU. Despite the loss, three players scored in double figures, led by senior guard Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) with 12, junior forward Alli Gloyd (Phoenix, Ariz.) with 11 and junior forward Erica Barnes (Sacramento, Calif.) with 10. Barnes also added eight rebounds in the matchup.
The week’s games will not be streamed live, but both can be heard live on KTUC AM 1400. The broadcasts will start 15 minutes prior to tip-off for the pregame show, with Derrick Palmer (play-by-play) and Lisa Salgado
