Last Weekend: The Wildcats began the 2012 season on the road playing No.18 Long Beach State. Led by junior Jazmin Ponce, the Wildcats were able to hold the 49ers scoreless through the first half. The only goal of the evening for Arizona came from Ponce to tie the game up and eventually send the match in to overtime. Gabby Kaufman made her debut in goal and registered six saves. The Wildcats utilized 16 players in the match, including Ponce, Mykaylin Rosenquist, Ariel Boulicault, Kirstyn Magyar, Shannon Heinzler, and Sheridan Cohen who each played the full 93 minutes.
About the Cougars: Brigham Young began the 2012 season on the road against UC Irvine and walked away with a 3-2 overtime victory in Irvine, Calif. Three Cougars scored in the game: junior Niki Fernandes, freshman Michelle Murphy, and sophomore Jaiden Thornock. Last season, BYU posted a record of 11-5-3. About the Cats: Arizona enters the 2012 season with nine returning starters, 16 total letter winners, and eight talented incoming freshmen. Head coach Lisa Oyen enters her third full season as head coach of the Arizona women's soccer team hoping to turn the Wildcat's soccer program around.
Montaya an Olympian: Junior midfielder Ana-Maria Montoya returns to the Wildcats after a summer spent with the Colombian Women's National Team, which competed in the 2012 London Olympic Games. Montoya, who started 19 games as a sophomore, made her Olympic debut against the United States in London.
A Salute to Selman: During the 2012 season, the Wildcat women's soccer team will be wearing a pre-game warm-up shirt with the No. 13 in honor of Lexe Selman, a member of UA's 2012 signing class. Selman is currently undergoing chemotherapy treatment for Leukemia, which she was diagnosed with on April 20 of this year. Vowing to Selman and her family to keep her dreams of playing at the collegiate soccer level alive, Arizona head coach Lisa Oyen has promised to hold a roster spot and number until she is able to play. Coach Oyen and assistant head coaches Tim Bennett and Danielle Sunderhaus separately made trips to Utah to visit Selmen this summer.
Up Next: The wildcats are on the road again on Sunday, Aug. 26 to play against in-state rival, Northern Arizona University in Flagstaff, Ariz. Game time is scheduled for 12:00 p.m.
