No. 17 Arizona Softball (34-17, 11-12 Pac-12) was shut out for just the fourth time all season by Oregon State (34-20, 9-13 Pac-12) as Arizona's offense managed just four hits against the Beavers in front of the largest crowd at Hillenbrand Stadium all season, 2,680.
After compiling a season-high 15 hits against Oregon State on Thursday, the Wildcats offense went cold and did not score for the fourth time all season on just four hits, their third-fewest on the year.
The Beavers struck for three runs in the third off Kenzie Fowler and added another in the sixth against Shelby Babcock. Fowler (14-8) took the loss, going 4.1 innings and allowing three runs on seven hits while walking one and striking out six. In relief, Babcock allowed a run on two hits with two Ks in 2.2 innings of work.
Oregon State starter Marina Demore (8-5) turned in quite a performance in the circle. Demore allowed just a bloop single through the first five innings and four total in the game. She walked three and struck out five in the contest.
Only one of Oregon State's four runs was earned and all four runs scored with two out.
The Beavers drew first blood in the third inning with a trio of unearned runs. An error, fielder's choice and single loaded the bases with none out for the Beavers' 2-3-4 hitters. After a strikeout and a force at the plate, Erin Guzy recorded an infield RBI single to break the scoreless tie. Fowler followed that by walking and hitting the next two batters, respectively, to give OSU a 3-0 lead.
Oregon State added to its lead in the sixth when Elizabeth Santana popped an RBI single beyond first base to give the Beavers a 4-0 lead.
Three of Arizona's four hits came from this point forward, but no Cat could cross home plate.
Arizona and Oregon State meet for the series rubber match Saturday at noon. Tomorrow marks the final regular season home game in the careers of seniors Kristen Arriola, Nicole Bryan, Karissa Buchanan, Lini Koria and Jessica Spigner..
