TEMPE, Ariz. - UA junior Jennie Finch pitched a two-hit shutout and the Cats
blasted five home runs to defeat No. 8 Louisiana State, 10-0, in seven
innings Saturday morning at the Fiesta Bowl Tournament.
Third baseman Toni Mascarenas drove in a run in the first with a double,
two runs in the third with a double and hit her third home run of the
season in the sixth for Arizona (7-0). UA had back-to-back homers by Kim
Vandergeest and Allison Andrade earlier in that frame, plus added a solo
shot by Finch in the seventh and a two-run blast by freshman pinch-hitter
Jenny Gladding.
Finch had a no hitter until the seventh when she gave up two singles to
LSU (1-1). She struck out six to improve to 2-0 on the year.
In tournament action Friday, Arizona beat Georgia 6-0 and Texas 14-0.
The Cats, who were to play No. 12 Nebraska at 5:30 p.m., have not given up
a run or committed an error in their seven victories. UA closes out action
in the tournament with a 10 a.m. game against No. 16 South Carolina and a
noon contest against Missouri. Those games will be played at the Cave Creek
Softball Complex in Phoenix, just east of I-17 north of Dunlap Road.
