"I'm really proud of the women's team for coming together like that," said head coach Eric Hansen. "It's been a work in progress and it's nice to see them happy and together."
Junior Margo Geer and Sophomore Bonnie Brandon paced the lady swimmers with two individual victories each. Geer won the 200 and 100 frees with times of 1:46.86 and 48.21, respectively. Brandon hit the wall first in both the 1000 free (9:55.51) and 500 free (4:50.57). Also ending the day for the women with two individual victories was junior diver Samantha Pickens. She scored a 343.73 in the 1m dive and a 289.35 in the 3m dive to cruise to first-place finishes.
The women also won the two relays of the day. Seniors Megan Lafferty and Ellyn Baumgardner swam a 1:38.40 in the 200 medley relay along with Smart and Geer, while Geer, Flederbach, Brandon, and junior Alana Pazevic posted a 3:18.33 in the 400 free relay.
On the men's side, Rafael Quintero added to his impressive record. The freshman scored 326.48 in the 1m dive and 380.55 in the 3m dive to win both the events.
Sophomore Kevin Cordes also continued his dominance in the breaststroke, winning the 100 breast with a time of 54.55. Other Wildcat winners included freshman Michael Meyer and juniors Giles Smith and Mitchell Friedemann. Meyer, who enrolled at Arizona for the spring semester, won the 400 IM with a time of 3:57.51 in his first meet with the team. Friedemann took first in the 100 back (47.93), while Smith was victorious in the 50 free (20.28).
The Arizona swimming and diving team will return to action tomorrow, Saturday, Jan. 26 when they host Stanford at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
