Final Stats

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Arizona men's and women's swimming teams completed the first day of competition at the Texas Invitational tonight. The meet is a three-day event, which will resume tomorrow morning with preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. The meet is being held at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swimming Center on the University of Texas campus.

On the men's side of the event senior All-American Roland Schoeman made the NCAA qualifying time in the 50y free when he touched the wall at 19.33 in the first leg of the 200y free relay. The relay team, made up of All-American senior Kristopher Souther, sophomore Greg Owen, Schoeman and sophomore All-American Eric la Fleur, missed the NCAA qualifying time by ten one-hundredths of a second when they hit the wall at 1:18.57. The time is a consideration time for the Cats relay squad.

For the Arizona women junior All-American Beth Botsford qualified for the 2002 NCAA Championships in the 100y fly. Botsford made the qualifying time at 54.03. Other Wildcat women swimming to qualifying times today were freshman Emily Mason in the 500y free at 4:41.08, and senior All-American Sarah Tolar in the 200y IM (2:00.27).

The Women also had a relay team make a NCAA qualifying time in the 400y medley relay with the time of 3:37.33. The team consisted of Botsford, sophomore Jessica Wagner, senior Maria Papadopoulou and Tolar.
