Women's Swim Team Defeats Washington State

TUCSON, Ariz.Not a single event was lost in the Arizona women’s swim team dual against Washington State. The Wildcats won all eleven events to propel them to a 121-76 victory Friday afternoon at Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.

In the individual events, juniors Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio) and Ashley Evans (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the way for the Wildcats with two first place finishes apiece. Geer blew the competition away in the 100 free with a time of 48.58, besting last weeks’ time of 48.88, which was this year’s fastest time nationally.  She also swam to a 1:46.82 victory in the 200 free. Evans was victorious in both the 1000 free at 10:28.65 and the 200 fly at 2:03.20.

The freshman duo of Emma Schoettmer (Greenwood, Ind.) and Bonnie Brandon (Centennial, Colo.) kept their momentum going with wins in the 200 breast and 500 free, respectively. Schoettmer won the 200 breast with a time of 2:13.74, and Brandon posted a 4:49.70 to win the 500 free.

Other individual winners include sophomore Shannyn Hultin (Westlake Village, Calif.), junior Kait Flederbach (Carmel, Ind.), and senior Lauren Smart (Charlotte, N.C.). Hultin won the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.84, Flederbach won the 50 free with a time of 23.09, and Smart came in first the 200 back with a 2:01.14.

The women also swept the two relays of the day, the 200 medley and the 200 free. Smart, Flederbach, and seniors Chelsey Salli (Vancouver, B.C.) and Megan Lafferty (Upper Dublin, Pa.) posted a 1:40.56 to win the 200 medley relay. The 200 free relay was won in 1:31.86 by Geer, Flederbach, Smart, and junior Alana Pazevic (Mill Creek, Wash.).

The women swimmers and divers will head up to Las Vegas tomorrow to join the men in their meet against UNLV and Denver. The starting time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at the Buchanan Natatorium.
