TUCSON, Ariz. -
No. 28 Arizona (4-2) fell to No. 20 Texas Tech (3-1), 4-3, at Arizona's Robson Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon.
After falling behind 3-0 to Texas Tech, Arizona stormed back and closed the deficit to one point. However, the Wildcats' comeback fell short when UA junior Akilah James (Brooklyn, N.Y.) dropped the third set to Elizabeth Ullathrone in the decisive match.
"This was a tough loss at home," Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. "But we played hard all the way through. A few points in the doubles didn't go our way and that was costly."
After splitting the first two doubles matches, the Wildcats dropped the third match that concluded in a tiebreaker and gave up the doubles point.
Texas Tech extended its one point lead to three after winning at the No. 5 and 6 spots.
Arizona's comeback started when UA junior Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) defeated No. 49 Samantha Adams, 6-3, 6-3, at the No. 1 spot.
At the No. 2 spot, Arizona junior Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) earned a win against Kenna Kilgo, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2.
Arizona dropped the next match to see their first loss at home this season. At the No. 3 spot, UA sophomore Laura Oldham came back after dropping the first set against Rashmi Teltumbde, 1-6, 6-4, 7-5.
"In singles, I was so proud of how we battled," Maes said. "We certainly have improvements to make, but our girls are committed to the process and we continue to get a little better each week."
The Wildcats came into today's match with an impressive home court winning streak of 16-consecutive matches.
Arizona heads to San Diego for a pair of matches against San Diego State on Friday, Feb. 8 at 2 p.m. and San Diego on Saturday, Feb. 9 at 10:30 a.m.
