SAN DIEGO, Calif -

Five Arizona women's tennis players posted singles wins on the first day of the ITA Regional Championships in San Diego, Calif.

In the round of 128 in singles play, Arizona junior Susan Mc Rann, sophomore Laura Oldham and freshman Shayne Austin advanced to the round of 64, all winning in the first two sets of their respective matches. The rest of the Wildcat team shared byes in the first round of singles play.

After posting a win in the first round, Mc Rann continued her winning form and took two out of three sets against San Diego State's Alicia Aguilar to advance to the round of 32.

The Wildcats saw two more victories in the round of 64, as junior Kim Stubbe defeated San Diego State's Tabitha Nguyen 6-3, 6-3. Sophomore Hailey Johnson took two out of three sets against Irvine's Alison Klein.

On the doubles side, Stubbe and freshman Inge Hendrikx paired up to defeat San Deigo State's Kristin Buth and Laura Antonana-Irlarte, 8-2, to advance to the round of 32.

"Today was a mixed day," Arizona Head Coach Vicky Maes said. "I was pleased with our effort, but I felt we could have done better in some key areas."

Arizona saw three of its seven players advance to the round of 32 in singles play on day one and has three of its four doubles teams lined up to compete on day two.

"I felt we let some opportunities slip away," head coach Maes said. "Even though we are young and we are still learning, everyone has to step up and compete with a little more heart."

The Wildcats will return to the court on Friday, Oct. 19 to continue tournament action.
