SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Arizona women’s tennis team impressed after day one of the SDSU Fall Classic in San Diego, Calif. on Friday. Of the four players competing, three advanced to the second round in their respective singles brackets and one doubles team also advanced.
Arizona freshman Inge Hendrikx (Zendert, The Netherlands) earned her first collegiate victory in singles play. Competing in the grey bracket, Hendrikx defeated SMU’s Elena Fayner in two sets, 7-6, 7-5.
Along with Hendrikx, Arizona juniors Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) both won their individual matches in singles competition.
Smyth advanced in the white bracket by defeating SDSU’s Alicia Aguilar, 6-2, 6-2.
Stubbe dropped her first set against SMU’s Sasha Malyachikova, 3-6 but took the next two sets and the match, 6-4, 6-4, in the red bracket.
In doubles competition, Smyth and Stubbe advanced to the second round of the black bracket. The duo defeated SMU’s Malyachikova and Hristina Dishkova, 8-5.
“The team really had to dig deep and fight hard to get through some tough matches today,” Arizona Assistant Coach Nick Dargene said. “Inge got her first college win in singles, and Lacey got a win in her first singles match since being back from injury.”
The Wildcats will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 10, to continue tournament action.
