SAN DIEGO, Calif. -
Juniors Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) earned wins in both singles and doubles play to advance to the final round of the SDSU Fall Classic on Saturday in San Diego, Calif.
Smyth faced Utah’s Callie Craig in the semifinals of the white bracket. After taking the first set, 6-4, Smyth dropped the next set, 2-6 but regained control by winning the last set, 6-4.
Smyth will also pair up with teammate Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) in the doubles final. The pair defeated Washington’s Riki Shimizu and Elianne Douglas-Miron on Saturday, 8-5.
“(There were) very harsh weather conditions,” Arizona Assistant Coach Nick Dargene said. “The girls really had to battle the wind as well as tough opponents. Smyth did a great job of keeping her composure and raising her level of play to beat a very solid Utah player.”
The SDSU Fall Classic will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 11, with the singles and doubles finals.
